Su nombre significa "Lugar de los chichicastes" o de la "zarzas". El cementerio de Chichicastenango es uno de los más famosos del mundo debido a la peculiaridad de su colorido y sus tradiciones. Cada color en este lugar tiene un significado según su tradición:
- El color blanco para enterrar a los padres, que significa pureza.
- Las madres se entierran bajo el color azul turquesa que significa protección para las mujeres.
- Los niños se entierran bajo el azul celeste y las niñas bajo el rosado.
- Los abuelos son enterrados bajo el color amarillo que significa la protección del sol sobre la humanidad.

Alrededor del cementerio, tenemos el museo Pascual Abaj con objetos antigüos como vasijas, máscaras o telas típicas; y algunos altares, hay aproximadamente unos 35, el más importante se encuentra detrás del anterior museo, bajo el nombre de Turcaj, "Lugar Sagrado", a ellos llegan importantes chamanes o doctores de la región a practicar diversos rituales.

Cómo llegar: Si es en vehículo, se coge la ruta inter-americana hacia Quetzaltenango. Al llegar, se cruza hacia Chichicastenango que se encuentra en el kilómetro 147. Si se va en autobús, se recomienda cogerlo en Antigua, o en Panajachel.
